Nestled in the heart of Northumberland lies a very important place to me — our very own piece of woodland.
I believe that furniture making extends far beyond the confines of the workshop. It starts with understanding the material, how it is made and the land that creates and produces it. Our woodland is more than just a supply source; it's an important ecosystem that I am dedicated to preserving. This commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable practices is an essential guide everything that I do within my practice.
Furniture shouldn't just fill spaces, it should also celebrate and respect the intrinsic value of our natural world that created it.
Every week I go to the woods for 'Woodland Wednesday' - it is here that I get great inspiration for many of my designs - but I also get closer to nature and learn to look after the land on which the trees grow.
Spending time in nature weekly is such a good thing for all of us - it boosts your mental health, reduces stress, and enhances physical well-being. Fresh air and natural surroundings improve mood, creativity, and concentration. Regular outdoor activities can strengthen your immune system, encourage physical exercise, and create a deeper connection to the environment, benefiting both us and the planet!
Our woodland has been around for a long time - we can tell this from the kind of trees that grow here, the quality and variety of flora and fauna on the woodland floor and the name and shape of the woodland. All of these factors lead us to believe our woodland has been around for more than 500 years.
I see myself very much as the guardian for this place - but only whilst it is in my hands - I hope, and expect, the trees we have will live much longer than me and I am just looking after them whilst I am here.
